The style of Muay Thai Kickboxing originates from Thailand and incorporates punches, kicks, elbows and knees. It was taught as a fundamental skill in the Thai army, and eventually became the national sport of Thailand.

BJC Muay Thai Kickboxing teaches students effective self-defence skills with a challenging and competitive edge. A Grading System is also included in this form of Muay Thai, similar to the system of most martial arts, and is used to acknowledge the skills, experience, commitment and maturity of students.

The grading system also gives students a goal on which to focus, and gives the instructors an opportunity to provide comprehensive feedback on the student's progress, improvement, and skill level.

A normal Muay Thai Kickboxing class consists of a good warm-up, Stretching, Pushups and Sit-ups, Technique Improvement, Shadow Sparring, Padwork and light sparring (depending on class level). All classes provide the student with a great overall workout on their fitness, strength, flexibility and co-ordination, which is why many students enjoy the benefits of Muay Thai Boxing classes.

Muay Thai 'belts' are actually the singlets the students wear, and identifies their level achieved:

White Singlet Beginner
Yellow Singlet 6+weeks
Orange Singlet 12+weeks
Blue Singlet 3+ months
Green Singlet 6-9 months +
Brown Singlet 18+ months
Black Singlet with white logo- 1st Degree 28+ months
Black Singlet 1st to 5th Degree Individually assessed

[Please note these grading periods are based on individual attendence and performance, and are to be used as a guide only]

Instructors should always be referred to as Mr/Ms (Last Name)

The grading assessment is similar from yellow till blue, then additional aparring rounds from green level onwards. The students will complete their own warm-up and stretch, then complete the required amount of pushups and situps for their grade. There are two rounds of Shadow Sparring, and the student is then assessed on their padwork, which includes punches, kicks, elbows, knees, footwork and attack and defence techniques. Depending on the grade being assessed, the students will then complete either some basic partner drills (beginner), or a specified amount of sparring rounds.

Level 5 May Thai is one of the hardest grades to achieve, and takes a lot of dedication to training and fitness. It is designed to encourage people to reach their perceived limit, and then 'suck it in, and push it out'. Students who achieve this grade, or even attempt the grading, should be proud of where they are and what they have accomplished as students. Finally, it is the last truly physical grading a student has to complete within the system.

BJC Muay Thai Kickboxing is appropriate for men and women of all ages, and can be modified according to an individual's age and/or physical abilities, but more importantly it provides you with self-defence skills and self-confidence. Most of our dedicated beginner students see a significant change in their weight, personal appearance and energy levels after around 3 months.
