January 8th, 1998
In the beginning, Murray McKechnie had eight students in a back room of the local performing arts centre.
Now, just over 10 years later, there are over 200 members, and the club only continues to grow.
Over recent years, Murray McKechnie and Kalamunda Kickboxing have also trained and coached national and international competitive fighters, including:
- Multiple World Title Fight Winner Daniel Dawson
- Former International WMC Muay Thai Champion Carla Mayer
- The late Dave Hoy
- Three-time Australian Title Winner Dave Catto
- Alicia Pestana, Silver Medallist at 2005 World Amateurs and WA State Title holder
- Zuzia Zykus, Gold Medallist at 2006 World Amateurs and WA State Title holder
- Melissa Norton, 2006 Junior WA State Title holder
Murray McKechnie has also conducted regular self defence workshops at most of the local schools, with great response from the students. This includes anti-bully and street self defence for females.
Our facilities are state of the art, with:
- Fight ring
- Wall to wall mirrors
- A full range of kick shields, hand pads and Thai pads
- Stretching and warm-up equipment.
Kalamunda's range of training now includes Muay Thai Kickboxing, Zen Do Kai Karate, MMA and Kids Karate.
Kalamunda Kickboxing also has numerous active fighters, who are regularly invited to compete and train all over Australia and the world on a regular basis, including elite Muay Thai training camps in Thailand.
Several fighters who have trained at Kalamunda Kickboxing and under Murray's coaching have gone on to win State, Australian and World Muay Thai Championships, such as Alicia Pestana (current Australian Champion), Carla Mayer & Theresa Carter.
